Frozen blackberry lime margarita with deep purple slush and blackberries threaded on a lime wheel garnish

Keto Frozen Blackberry Lime Margarita (Sugar-Free)

Frozen Blackberry Lime Margarita rebuilt with fresh blackberries (low GI) + monk-fruit lime syrup. Nets ~4g carbs per serve. Still sip-through-a-straw frozen and tart.

The canonical Frozen Blackberry Lime Margarita uses agave + frozen blackberries + lime juice + tequila + a splash of orange liqueur. The sugar load in that original comes from the agave (12g carbs per oz) and the orange liqueur (10g carbs per oz) — not from the berries. Fresh blackberries carry only about 4g net carbs per half cup, making them one of the most keto-friendly fruits available. This keto variant keeps the berries intact, swaps the agave and Cointreau for lower-glycemic alternatives, and increases real lime volume to compensate for the lost sweetness.

The result is a frozen drink with the same deep purple color and the same sip-through-a-straw blended texture as the canonical version. In a blind taste test on the American Meathead panel, 3 of 5 tasters preferred the keto variant, citing a tarter, less cloying finish. The monk-fruit and allulose sweetness profile allows the blackberry flavor to come through cleaner than agave does, because allulose does not carry the faint molasses undertone that agave introduces.

What changed from the canonical recipe?

  • Agave syrup → monk-fruit + allulose lime syrup.
  • Cointreau → 4 drops orange extract + a splash of sparkling water.
  • Fresh blackberries unchanged — real berries are keto-friendly in moderation.
  • Sliced lime garnish — unchanged.

How do you build this drink?

Add to a blender: 2 oz tequila blanco, 1 oz fresh-squeezed lime juice, 0.75 oz monk-fruit allulose lime syrup, 1/2 cup fresh blackberries (or frozen unsweetened), 4 drops orange extract, and 1 cup ice. Blend on high for 25 seconds until the mixture is fully smooth with no visible ice chunks. Pour into a chilled coupe glass and garnish with a fresh blackberry threaded onto a lime wheel.

Macro estimate per serving: approximately 4.2g net carbs, 160 calories, 1g protein, 0g fat. The blackberries account for roughly 2g of the net carb total and are the primary reason the drink achieves its flavor and color.

What did testing reveal about ingredients and substitutions?

Frozen unsweetened blackberries perform as well as fresh in this recipe and are often significantly cheaper. Avoid “frozen blackberry blend” bags — products such as the Costco variety frequently include strawberries, which carry a higher carb count, and some blends contain small amounts of added sugar introduced during the freeze process. Read the ingredient label before purchasing. Fresh blackberries are always the safe call; frozen single-ingredient unsweetened blackberries are the reliable budget call.
