Camp Chef Woodwind Pro 24 Review: The Best $1,000 Pellet Smoker of 2026

4.7 · ·

✓ Owned & Tested · 23 cooks logged · Pro 24 unit purchased March 2026

▸ Our Pick 2026 · Best Pellet Under $1,000

Hits 700°F for searing, holds 225°F brisket overnight, and the sidekick burner makes it the most versatile pellet under $1,000 we’ve tested.

  • 700°F searing temps
  • Rock-solid overnight temp hold
  • Sidekick sear burner included
  • 3-year warranty, support actually answers
  • 22 lb hopper needs refill on 14-hr cooks
  • WiFi app is utilitarian, not pretty

Bottom Line Up Front

After 23 cooks, here’s the verdict.

The Camp Chef Woodwind Pro 24 is the pellet smoker we recommend to every reader spending under $1,000 in 2026. It’s not the prettiest grill on the deck and the app feels like it was designed by engineers (not designers), but it does the two things that actually matter — holds low temps for overnight brisket and hits 700°F searing temps — better than anything else at this price.

We’ve cooked 23 sessions on this unit over four months: six briskets, seven rib racks, four steakhouse-grade reverse-sear ribeyes, three pizzas, and three vegetable cooks. The Woodwind held 225°F within ±5° on every overnight cook. The sidekick side burner is a sleeper feature — it turns the grill into a 3-zone cooking platform without buying a second appliance.

Skip it if: you cook for more than 8 people regularly (570 sq in is tight), you hate WiFi-connected gear, or your budget is under $600. For everyone else, this is the one.

FAQ

Questions readers asked

Is the WiFi connection reliable on overnight cooks?

Yes — we lost connection twice in 23 cooks. Both times the grill kept holding the last setpoint, which is what you want. CC Connect 2.0 reconnects automatically once WiFi is back.

How long does a full hopper last at low temps?

At 225°F you get roughly 12-14 hours per 22 lb hopper of competition-blend pellets. For full 18-hour brisket cooks, plan one refill around hour 12. Higher temps burn pellets faster — at 400°F you're looking at 6-7 hours per fill.

Can I add a sear box later, or do I need it day one?

The sidekick sear burner is included on the Pro 24. The base Woodwind (non-Pro) sells the sear burner separately for $179. If you want searing capability, the Pro is the $200 better deal.

Does it hold temp in cold weather?

Better than every other pellet we tested. We cooked a brisket overnight in 18°F weather with light snow — it held 225°F with no thermal blanket. The insulated firebox is a real upgrade over the standard Woodwind.

What pellets did you test with?

Mostly Lumber Jack Competition Blend and Bear Mountain Gourmet. The Camp Chef does fine with bagged big-box pellets too — we ran a fill of Pit Boss Competition Blend without any issue. Avoid the cheap stuff from hardware stores; the ash output is brutal.
