2026 BBQ Gear Buying Guide

The 2026 BBQ Gear Buying Guide.

The picks we’d actually buy with our own money this year. One verdict per category. Updated June 2026.

This guide is the one I wish someone had handed me before I bought my first three smokers. There are only seven categories that matter for a backyard pitmaster — and in each one, there is one pick I would buy again, and one pick I would only recommend with caveats. Here is every one.

1. The pellet smoker pick

Best Overall

Camp Chef Woodwind Pro 24

$999

The pellet smoker we recommend to every reader spending under $1,000. The side searing chamber gives you 1000°F+ sear floors that no other sub-$1K pellet hits. Real WiFi (not “WiFi” that drops every 30 minutes). Temp holds within 8°F across our 14-cook logged test set, including three overnight briskets.

2. The charcoal grill pick

Best Overall

Weber Performer Deluxe Kettle

$429

The same proven 22-inch kettle most pitmasters started on, with a gas-ignite chimney and a hardwood prep shelf added on. Still the most versatile cooking surface you can buy — sears like a steakhouse, smokes like an offset with vortex setups. We’ve owned three of these. None have failed in six years of use.

3. The offset stick burner pick

Best Overall

Old Country Brazos

$899

The mid-tier offset that punches above its price. Real 1/4-inch steel where it matters (cook chamber + firebox), heavy welded seams, and a chimney height tall enough to actually draw clean. We logged six straight comp-practice cooks on ours — temps held within 25°F once we figured the drafting.

4. The wireless meat thermometer pick

Best Overall

Fireboard 2 Pro

$249

Six probes, real WiFi (not Bluetooth-only), accurate to within 1°F across our calibration tests, drive-fan output for stoker setups, and an app that doesn’t constantly require re-pairing. Once you have one you stop fiddling with thermometers entirely.

5. The instant-read thermometer pick

Best Overall

Thermapen ONE

$109

One-second reads, accurate to within 0.7°F, an IP67 rating that actually holds up to grease and rinses, and a battery that lasts a year of weekly use. Costs twice the Lavatools Javelin Pro and earns it.

6. The BBQ gloves pick

Best Overall

RAPICCA 932°F Insulated

$28

Aramid-fiber outer with silicone palm grip. Handles a hot rib rack barehanded without melting, slips off easily, washes in the sink. We’ve burned through three pairs in two years of daily testing — at $28 a pair we’d buy them again every time.

7. The wood pellets pick

Best Overall

Lumber Jack Competition Blend

$28 / 40lb bag

Pure hardwood — no fillers, no oils. Burns cleaner than Traeger’s house pellets, leaves less ash, and the maple/hickory/cherry blend nails brisket and pork without thinking. We’ve gone through eight 40-pound bags this year. Zero auger jams.

How we picked

Every product here we bought at retail. We do not accept loaner units. We do not change rankings when affiliate commission rates change. We log a minimum of 10 cooks before we publish a review and we usually log 20+. We photograph the failures along with the wins. See How We Test Gear for the full rubric and Editorial Standards for the rules we follow.
